Watching my now 3.5yo daughter developing and discovering the world has been an adventure. She has added joy to our blended family. My work at home mom (WAHM) status has injected a certain amount of stress into an already hectic household.

Last year, Peter built a frame for me and we grew two tomato plants and a ton of weeds. I'm the type of person who needs clear instructions when I start something with which I have no real experience. So I bought a book on Square Foot Gardening. It's perfect for our needs - it's tailor made for people with a small amount of space.

I really feel like a bear coming out of hibernation. I have so much more energy to get out and do things. We have been thoroughly enjoying the weather. Even rainy days are good for splashing in puddles.

For years, I've been saying I need to make a compost heap. I balked at the expense of purchasing one of the big plastic bins, so I kept putting off purchasing one of those. I saw instructions on how to make a bin using discarded pallets, but our cars are too small to lug those home. I saw instructions on how to make one out of chicken wire wrapped around a few posts, but I wondered how in the world I could get down in there to stir it around.

Last weekend we trecked to Southern Indiana to Leane & Michael's Sugarbush for their 2009 Maple Syrup Festival (http://www.lmsugarbush.com/ourfestival.html). It took us about an hour's pleasant drive to get there through winding hilly country roads (after we got off I65). We parked in a muddy field and bundled up against the biting wind. I think the high was something like 28 degrees.

Like so many people, I struggle with the concept of religion. On the one hand, because of my own haphazard and varied childhood religious experiences, I think it is important to have a community. On the other hand, because of my own haphazard and varied childhood religious experiences, organized religion sometimes gives me the willies and I recognize that a person can be a member of a close-knit non-religious community. As a result, we actually belong to a church, but don't attend very often.

This time of the year brings my personal religious struggles to the forefront. Which elements of the season do I stress for my young child? What traditions do we want to develop as a family?
