We have two raised garden boxes (so far - we hope to build a few more) in which we have tomatoes, bell peppers, carrots, lettuce, spinach, and cucumbers.  Woo hoo!  They were all from seeds, too, so we are pretty proud of ourselves.  :)  We also have a little planter box hanging from our deck rail, and we are trying to grow lettuce but I think it's getting too much sun right now, so they wilt before they get a chance to really grow.  But I did just eat some of our spinach yesterday and it was SO GOOD!  I love growing our own food.

We also have a big flower box in the front of our house, and we dumped a bunch of wildflower seeds in it about a month ago. So far all we have is WEEDS.    I think we're going to have to go buy some flowers to plant in it, because it looks terrible.  That may be our project over the next couple of weekends.

So what about y'all??

I haven't started growing anything yet. After all the talk about growing in the front yard, I might do that - is it too late to start growing - obviously starters, I'd say it is too late for seed. It is the only area where we consistantly get sun, and the back is off limits anyway because the children and dogs play out there.

I definitely want to plant some fresh herbs. I almost bought a beautiful basil plant at the farmer's market today but didn't because I didn't want to carry it home and push the stroller. I met some friends there and she offered to drive it to my house, should've done it. There's always next week. Would love some parsley and cilantro too. Any other ideas for starting late? I'm ready to rip up the ugly shrubs and plant some delicious food. :)

We have stuff growing in the front yard at the store - corn, tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, basil, beans, peas and marigolds and zinnias. We started them all from seed, and its painfully obvious with some of them. Some of our plants are just pitiful, but I will stick it out through the summer with them and maybe they will catch up. We do already have peas, and I can't wait till they are ready to eat!
Crunchymama - you could put some things in pots if the yard isn't ready. Tomatoes and herbs do really well in pots. I definitely don't think it's too late.

We're growing in pots right now. We have two big things of potatoes, 2 tomatoes, a snap pea, and a planter of sunflowers. The cilantro didn't make it, but it was a freeby from the farmers market because he thought it wouldn't make it.

We have one raised bed built, but it's just growing grass and weeds. We need to order a load of dirt so some of our poor veggies can get in the ground. We'd like to end up with 3 or 4 beds - about 4x6 feet each. The only sun we get is in the front yard. My dream is to have a white picket fence around the yard to enclose all of it.

We're growing tomatoes and herbs.  I also tried to start things from seed, but as soon as I put them down birds swoop down in big flocks and eat them all up.  I've had better luck starting seeds on the screened-in porch and then transferring them outside as seedlings.  But the bunnies still seem to be getting more than their fair share.

Piper "picked" all our sunflowers yesterday. :( She pulled every one up by its roots. I tried to replant them but it looks like all but one will die.

Oh, well. I asked her why she pulled them all up and she said, "Because I did." I guess that serves me right for asking.

We're trying to grow strawberries this year but the squirrels have gotten to every ripe berry before we have. Today I noticed that something chewed off most of the white berries, I guess they got tired of waiting for them to ripen. The funny thing is our neighbor has a huge strawberry patch and says she's never had problems with squirrels getting into them. Go figure.

I just planted some potatoes yesterday. We're super excited about those.

It's definitely not too late to plant. You could pick up some tomato plants from any farmers' market and pop them in the dirt. It's hard NOT to get tomatoes to grow, lol. My very first veggie growing experience was sticking a few tomatoes in a recycle bin on my apartment balcony. They did great.

ive always started potatoes from the ones we eat (the eyes we cut off) i know this isnt recommended, but it seemed to work (i did this in nc, and wasnt too diligent about getting results, but we def had some baby potatoes)

i dont think its too late (i hope not at least, since i STILL have seeds to start) for seeds, and its def not too late for small plants (like you pick up at the markets)

so far, from seed, weve got squash, zucchini, mesculin, peas, and cantaloupe, sunflower seedlings.

from plants weve got basil, tomatoes, peppers, broccoli, brussel sprouts, strawberry, raspberry, lavender, rosemary, chamomile and lemon balm.

we also have wild strawberries all over the yard, in addition to oregano, and onions that were here when we got here. :D

whew, and i feel like we have nothing. i have big dreams.

I saw seed potatoes for sale early on at Lowe's, but then I wasn't able to find them anywhere. I had to buy some online - I just googled and used Gurney's. They're Yukon Gold, which we love. I wish I'd been able to get some from Seed Savers (http://www.seedsavers.org/), but I never seem to be able to order on time. They sell out super fast.

Jes - My mom told me the same thing - just use a potato you bought at the store. I was determined to find some seed potatoes, dangit.

We transplanted some fruit bushes a friend gave us - gooseberry, raspberry & blackberry. Piper has already picked and eaten all the (unripe) gooseberries, but I'm seeing all kinds of little raspberry blossoms. I'm super excited. I know we won't get enough for a pie or anything, but I'm definitely looking toward the future. I'd love to fence in our front yard and plant berry bushes all around the perimeter.
