Book Club will be meeting on April 10 - location still to be determined. The selection this time was Little Heathens: Hard Times and High Spirits on an Iowa Farm During the Great Depression by Mildred Armstrong Kalish.

I just finished it last night and I really liked it. Even though the current economic conditions don't really compare to the Great Depression it was an interesting read. A lot of the ideas that are coming back around now due to environmental reasons as well as economic ones were things that people practiced as a matter of course.

I was reminded of my grandfather. He's no longer alive now, but just a few years ago I noticed him using a strange contraption. Mom had given him her old wheel barrow to use. The bottom had slowly rusted out. He took that thing completely remade it. He used the handles and the wheels and replaced the metal "barrow" part with a wooden wagon-looking thing. It worked perfectly fine, but looked kind of silly.

For some reason that sticks in my head as an example of using something for as long as humanly possible.

I am still in the middle of it, but I like it so far.  My MIL read it ages ago, and had copied and sent me some of the recipes from it, and I've been meaning to read it ever since.  Then again, I've been meaning to join you all at book club for, oh, about a year and never made it, so there you go.

I think I'll be done by next Fri, though, and hope to make it to the gathering as long as baby-to-be doesn't have other plans.

Erin, you should totally attend. It's a lot of fun. It's more about hanging out, good conversation, and good food that we didn't have to cook. Sometimes we spend more time than others discussing the book, but usually it's more about just getting together.

That's kind of funny about the recipes. I remember a lot of food with copious amounts of bacon fat, lol. I think she did list a few that had "bacon fat, or butter". The head cheese description made me throw up in my mouth a little bit, but she talks about it like it's just the yummiest thing ever. (Gagging again.) If it got down to it, I could "un-veg" and raise chickens for meat. Maybe pigs, but I don't think I could ever stomach the head cheese.

OMG.  I just read that part last night.  Barf.  I'd consider myself a reasonably adventurous eater, but um, no.  I think I definitely draw the line at pig head...the liver stuff didn't sound so hot either!

On the other hand, I think it'd be way fun to make the marshmallows...I keep saving it for a "rainy day" project with the kids, but have to psyche myself up for the associated kitchen mess first.

Hopefully, I'll get to go on Fri and hang out w/ you all!
