I have not had a nipple infection yet, and am unsure of what it feels like, but i think the feeling fits the description - achey/burning feeling - only on 1 side for now and just started this morning.  I remember the LC saying to use gentian violet if an infection occured, but i don't remember the instructions, and don't want to go and pay for a visit.  Any suggestions, on how to use the gentian violet; or thoughts on what else this could be?  What ever it is - me no likey!!!

I have been complaining about the same thing for the last two weeks or so- only it hasn't gotten any worse and it seems worst when the milk comes in. I just assumed it was a normal part of this whole teething pain-in the boob process.

Agghhh - I don't think I could handle this feeling as a normal part of nursing. I certainly didn't even consider that it could be a part of the whole teething process. She did bite me on the nipple in pain yesterday, but it didn't start hurting til this morning. there is much sadness in my boobie.

I used gentian violet for thrush when my son was a baby; I just sort of "painted" it on my nipples, with a cotton swab or ball. And I'm sure you know this, but in case anyone else ever lurks along and wants info on it ... Be prepared for the mess!  It will stain everything, so make sure you have a good supply of old nursing pads that you won't mind being stained, and wear old clothes, etc.  Also, be prepared for people to totaly freak out when they see your baby's mouth, since it looks sort of black and weird.  :)  It was really, really effective for us, though.

do you do it once a day, every time you nurse/pump, etc?  Good thing i don't have much planned for this week so we can be purple people eaters!

I only did it once or twice a day. I know I didn't do it every time I nursed, because my son was almost constantly nursing! I've also heard that bathing your nipples in vinegar will get rid of thrush, and that its good to go outside bare chested to let the sun shine on them (although where people are going to do that in most places in the 'Ville without arousing the attention of the neighbors or the police, I don't know). If it is thrush, acidophilus will be very effective, too. I don't know which would work sooner.

If it's from biting, I'm at a loss. Poor Caleb didn't get a single tooth until he was 11 months old. Which was alright by me! Whatever it is, I hope for your sake that it gets better soon.

Well, maybe it really was just the biting, the pain was gone w/in 24hrs and we didn't have to break out the messy purple stuff.  Thanks for the advice!
